Josie Duffy Rice is a journalist, writer, and podcast host whose work focuses on prosecutors, prisons, and the criminal justice system. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times, Vanity Fair, The New Yorker, The Atlantic, and Slate, among others, and she was a writer on the FX show The Premise.

Josie was the host, co-writer, and co-executive producer of the Peabody-nominated podcast Unreformed: The Story of the Alabama Industrial School for Negro Children, which The New Yorker named one of the top three podcasts of 2023 and New York Magazine called one of the year’s best. The show won an Ambie for Best History Podcast, a People’s Choice Webby for Best Podcast Writing, and three Signal Awards, including Listener’s Choice awards for Best Host and Best Limited Series. She also hosted the first season of Corruption Uncovered, Team Roc’s podcast investigating police corruption in Kansas City, Kansas; co-hosted What a Day, Crooked Media’s daily news podcast; and co-created, wrote, and co-hosted three seasons of Justice in America with Clint Smith. She has served as a consulting producer on other audio projects, including Campside Media’s hit Suspect.

Previously, Josie was President of The Appeal, a news publication covering the criminal justice system. She has appeared on The Daily Show, Late Night with Seth Meyers, and All In with Chris Hayes, and has been a guest on podcasts including You’re Wrong About, 5-4, Citations Needed, The Dig, Normal Gossip, and Why Is This Happening?. She was also a correspondent on Al Jazeera’s Fault Lines.
